Co-op Raised Bed Garden: Update

By Alan Guerrie, Garden Coordinator
COOP raised garden

We have now gardened four seasons in our raised beds located behind the Co-op Pioneer Street Classroom. The beds provide herbs and food for the Community Oven cooking classes, Meal Solutions, and other Demos at the Culinary Kiosk. The beds, drip irrigation system and hoops have been useful to demonstrate Four Season Gardening techniques to students of our Co-op’s gardening classes.

Currently the beds include: a box dedicated to herbs, one box for perennial flowers and two for vegetables. On Sept. 29th, the following vegetable starts were put in: Bok Choy, Nozaki and Prize Cabbage, and Joi Choy, Romaine, Mache, Claytonia, 3 types of Spinach, Arugula, Swiss Chard, and Kale were direct seeded. On Oct. 18th, volunteers planted Garlic, Kale, Spinach, and Chard.

There's still time to sign up for the Dec. 15th class "Sprouts, Microgreens and Seed Starting." We will have a 2013 spring and summer gardening class in January, a kid’s gardening class in June, and a fall and winter gardening class in July.
