Pierce Family Farm
Marguerite and her husband Patrick were two of the first people to get into "truck farming" in California in the mid 70's, meaning they grew vegetables for transport to market. They were simply interested in living a lifestyle more connected with the land, and began their farm in Orleans in 1977.
Over three decades since the inception of the Pierce Family Farm, the property is divided into ten acres of vegetable crops, and five acres of vineyard. During our southern Oregon winter, we at the Co-op benefit from the Pierce's plentiful bounty of carrots. The Pierce Family Farm also caters to markets where climate outright prevents certain crops from growing (i.e. kiwis.) On the vineyard is where the Pierce's kiwis grow, beside the table grapes and wine grapes (Merlot, Cabernet, Zinfandel, and a few other grape varieties.)
Marguerite and Patrick share the work of the farm with their two sons, the sons' partners, and two additional employees. Farming has been the Pierce family occupation for all of Marguerite and Patrick's adult lives. Thinking back to the mid 70's when they got their start, Marguerite says, "We just love good, fresh food, and I guess that's what got us into it."
